Easy to Use, Powerful Management Tools

The M1000e helps reduce the cost and complexity of managing computing resources so you can focus on growing your business or managing your organisation.
  • Centralised management controllers provide redundant, secure access paths for IT administrators to manage multiple enclosures and blades from a single console making the M1000e one of the easiest blade solutions to manage.
  • Dynamic power management provides the capability to set high/low power thresholds to help ensure blades operate within your power envelope.
  • Real time reporting for enclosure and blade power consumption, and the ability to prioritise blade slots for power provide optimal control over power resources.
  • One of the only blade solutions with an integrated KVM switch, enabling easy set up and deployment, and seamless integration into an existing KVM infrastructure

FlexAddress, The Simple Low Cost Way To Limit Downtime

FlexAddress delivers persistent network and storage identities, equipping your datacenter to handle predictable or even unplanned changes – increase, upgrade, or remove servers without affecting the network. Dell’s patent pending FlexAddress technology allows any M-Series blade enclosure to lock the World Wide Name (WWN) of the Fibre Channel controller and Media Access Control (MAC) of the Ethernet and iSCSI controller into a blade slot, instead of to the blade’s hardware as was done in the past. By removing the network and storage identity from the server hardware, customers are now able to upgrade and replace components or the entire server without changing the identity on the network. FlexAddress can be implemented in four easy steps, just select the slots and fabrics you want FlexAddress to be enabled on and the Chassis Management Controller handles everything from there, no matter what I/O modules you choose. Simple efficient integration, Simplified IT at its best.

IBM and Nuance team up on speech technology

IBM and Nuance have signed a join licensing and technical services agreement to help enhance and expand speech technology.
As part of the partnership, specialists from both companies will work together to incorporate IBM technology into Nuance's speech software, with the first products expected to be available within two years.
Under the terms of the agreement, Nuance will buy speech-related patents from IBM, but the latter will continue to serve its own customers in this regard.
"IBM and Nuance share a vision to proliferate advanced speech capabilities across a broad range of devices and environments," said Dr John Kelly, senior vice president and director of IBM Research.
"We recognise that Nuance is a leader in the speech marketplace, and we believe this technology agreement will accelerate the delivery of speech innovations to the world's consumers."
Although speech recognition software has been around for many years, it has often been marginalised as inefficient, inaccurate and resource heavy.
However, in recent times the technology has improved to the point where it is increasingly accurate at recognising natural speech, making it a viable option for voice controlled devices, speech-to-text systems and biometric security.
"We are enthusiastic about this strategic relationship with IBM, building on its rich history of speech research to accelerate the creation and adoption of next-generation speech solutions," said Paul Ricci, chairman and chief technology officer at Nuance.
"Through this relationship, we expect to inspire a new level of technical advancement unprecedented in the speech industry, from which the customers and partners of both companies will benefit."
Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.

HP Launches Mac-Compatible Home Servers

HP launched the newest generation of its MediaSmart Home Servers. The big news? The MediaSmart servers are now Mac-compatible.

HP is pushing its MediaSmart servers as a, well, smart way for consumers to connect individual computers and organize media files in one central location.

"A growing number of digital-savvy households have both Windows and Mac computers, with hundreds and sometimes thousands of media files and documents scattered across these devices," said Jason Zajac, vice president of strategy, Worldwide Attach Group, HP, in a statement. "The HP MediaSmart Server protects, stores and organizes this content from anywhere on a network so consumers can access and share it any place they are connected."

The Price Is Right

The two new MediaSmart Home Server models, the EX485 and the EX487, will be available for pre-order on January 5, and will ship in February 2009. Pricing starts at $599 for the EX485 and $749 for the EX487.

EX485

The HP MediaSmart Home Server EX485 comes loaded with Microsoft Windows Home Server, the price of which Microsoft recently cut by 30 percent. The EX485 has an Intel Celeron 2.0 Ghz 64-bit processor, 2GB of memory, and a 750 GB hard drive in one of its four drive bays.

EX487

The EX487 also comes with Microsoft Home Server, an Intel Celeron 2.0 Ghz processor and 2GB of RAM, but doubles the hard drive capacity, giving users a whopping 1.5 terabytes of space, and still leaving two of its four drive bays available for expansion.

Back It Up

The EX485 and the EX487 will automatically back up files on a daily basis, using Apple's Time Machine application for Macs and Microsoft Home Server's Backup program for PCs. Users can easily interact with the MediaSmart server using Control Centers for both PCs and Macs.

HP’s Firebird 803 Mini-Tower Leaked!

While the Blackbird 002 was a slick system, it was a bit difficult on the wallet. Thankfully it looks like the minds at HP and Voodoo have been working hard on a spiritual successor, the Firebird 803 that scraps space and expandability for a (presumably) lower price point.

The new smaller version of the behemoth gaming PC will pack a Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz processor, 4GB RAM, two Nvidia GeForce 9800S cards as well as other big components. HP has also put the power supply outside of the box, allowing them to cool down the chassis a bit easier.

Sadly, the Firebird won’t be expandable at all given its small form factor, and this greatly offsets any potential savings that might be on the price tag.

Here's the reported list of specs:

• NVIDIA nForce 760i SLI chipset
• Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz processor
• 4GB of RAM
• Dual NVIDIA GeForce 9800S cards
• Two 320GB SATA drives
• Blu-ray
• 5-in-1 card reader
• USB, 1 FireWire, 2 eSATA, 1 S/PDIF and 1 DVI dual-link
• Bluetooth
• 802.11n WiFi
